A member asked:

Can you get more oxygen if you breath with your diaphragm instead of lungs?

No: The main breathing muscle is the diaphragm. That together with the other breathing muscles between your ribs brings air in the lungs where the oxygen gets into the blood. It is the same air, no matter how you breathe. Hope that helps.

Trick question: The idea that you can switch this is a fantasy. Your diaphragm is your muscle of breathing, period. It starts assuming that role in the womb and continues through life. You can add to its work using various neck muscles when under duress. The lungs are simply a partially inflated bag of air blebs. The muscles within maintain the opening/closing of airways, nothing more.
