How come diabetics can't make insulin anymore?

Type 1 only: Type 1 diabetics lose the ability to make Insulin through auto-immune destruction of their Insulin making cells. Type 2 diabetics do nor respond normally to Insulin even though they can make it, at least for a number of years in the begining of the illness.
