Does seeing psychologist rather than psychiatrist work for you?

Good Question: Many don't quite know the difference between a psychiatrist & a psychologist. It can be confusing. A psychologist is someone with a ph.D degree in psychology. There are various kinds and some specialize in different areas like counselling, research and testing. A psychiatrist (like me) is a medical doctor with additional training and expertice in mental illness. As an md, i prescribe medicines.

Sometimes different : Psychiatrists but not psychologists (in most states and branches of military) prescribe medication. Psychologists often supplement assessments with psychological or neuropsychological testing though both can implement various therapies. Psychiatrists would oversee ruling out other medical causes for symptoms. Often combination therapy of meds and therapy is better than either alone.

Depends on need: The factors that determine whether or not a patient sees a psychologist or a psychiatrist depend on the severity of the symptoms. Psychiatrist can prescribe medication for psychological stress sores, however psychiatrists tend not to do therapy all that much anymore. On the other hand psychologists do not have prescript of power, however they do psychotherapy. The optimal approach is to use both.

I tend to encourage: patients to engage in therapy. If simple medications are needed - this can often be handled by general physicians. Recommend psychiatric help for more complex medication regimens. I am a psychiatrist who provides medication management, psychotherapy and acupuncture. However now a days many psychiatrists do not provide talking therapy - that is where psychologists come in.
