We don't know: Studies have shown that about thirty percent of people who tear their acl can function quite well without it. The vast majority of people cannot perform at a high enough level to participate in athletics after an acl tear, but there are a few who do. We think it is a combination of small anatomic differences, muscle strength and control and discipline.
