A member asked:

Young person tear their acl without playing sports? could it happen jumping off stairs or twisting it standing? how would they have to land to tear it

Quite common: Most acl injuries are non-contact injuries. They occur during twisting/pivoting motions and eccentric muscle contractions such as landing after jumping and planting the foot to change directions. Women may be more prone than men to non-contact acl injuries due to the physical make up of the knee.
