Depends on problem: 3 categories of potential health issues from thyroid nodules: a) large size affecting swallowing, breathing, voice ; b) over active production of thyroid hormone (hyperthyroid) ; and c) ~5% of nodules are cancer. Thyroid function tests (tsh, freet4) can assess for over-functioning. Depending on function, size and ultrasound features of nodules, they may require medication, biopsy and/or surgery.

Multiple nodules: Multiple does not necessarily mean dangerous. In fact, most people presenting with thyroid nodules have many. Each individual nodules carries its own 5% risk of malignancy.
