YourSurgeonKnowsBest: It's certainly not uncommon to have these symptoms one day after hernia repair. Of course, the best person to answer this is your surgeon--not all umbilical hernia repairs are the same--was mesh used?... Was it performed laparoscopically?...Have you had prior abdominal surgery? All of these variables can affect your recovery. I suggest you call your surgeon's office if your symptoms persist.

Yes: Local discomfort, tightness, pressure discomfort would be expected. Constipation from narcotic pain pills or residual effects of the anesthetic are common. Try to slowly move around more. Use pain medication carefully as it was prescribed. Get a laxative from the drug store if needed. Eat light food with more liquids early after surgery.

Likely normal: Those symptoms are pretty normal after an umbilical hernia repair. If the symptoms don't get better or are concerning to you, definitely call your surgeon's office. He will see you and make sure nothing is going on. In the meantime, you can take pain medications, laxatives, and eat and drink as tolerated.
