No other alternative: Unfortunately, the only way to treat a hernia is to surgically repair it. However, not all hernias need to be repaired--we always balance the risk of the hernia vs. The risk of repair, which has to be individualized. Some people may find relief wearing an abdominal binder or truss, but these are only temporary maneuvers. Of course, losing weight (if obese) and avoiding heavy lifting help, as well.

None: The only way to fix a hernia is with an operation. Support garments of various types may give some symptom relief, but do nothing for the underlying cause of the symptoms, and do nothing to prevent it from getting worse. See a general surgeon for a consultation.
