SUI is......?: ...System under investigation? Surgical mesh has been used for at least the past 40 years for many different operations (of which hernia repair I am most familiar). While it is true that the types of mesh have changed thru the years, the principle is the same--we use mesh when the benefits (prevent hernia recurrence) outweigh the risks (mesh rejection or infection)--best 2 discuss w/your surgeon.

Seek expert care: Mesh is not required in all cases of sui. In fact many cases can be manged under the care of a therapist with proper pelvic floor muscles. Alternatives such as trans vaginal taping may provide a less aggressive intervention. This choice is made in consultation with a specialist who will help you to select the best approach fe your unique circumstances.

Slings are fine: The small strip of mesh used for "mid urethral slings" has a much lower (but not zero) risk of problems or complications. This is different from the large sheets of mesh used for vaginal prolapse repairs. A new kind of sling called "single incision sligns" are still pretty new and the jury is still out if they are safe and effecdtive. Hope this helps.

Slings okay for SUI: Midurethral slings, especially the ones placed behind the pubic bone have a 15+ year track record of highly effective and safe treatment for stress urinary incontinence (complication rates of less than 5-8%). Vaginal mesh used for prolapse repairs is being investigated by the FDA specifically (complication rates of 20-30%).
