Lung cancer: It really depends on which type of lung cancer he has. Non-small cell cancer, which is about 85% of all lung cancers, has a reasonable chance of recovery if it is just localized disease. Prognosis is always better if there is not spread of the cancer. Small cell cancer is much more aggressive and the prognosis is much more guarded. Surgery and chemotherapy may be beneficial.

It can still spread: Depends on what kind of cancer and what stage. Best if can be surgically removed. If not, it is likely more advanced and make sure to ask his oncologist what is the prognosis in his specific case - with or without treatment. Most patients do better with treatment unless they are really very advanced. Hope that helps and good luck!
