Many things: First of all, they comfort and make sure the patient is cared for. If they're nurse practitioners, they may be the ones doing rape exams and collecting evidence that can be used to find or convict the perpetrator. If not, they assist the physician in doing these things. They may also help the patient contact her social supports for help getting home, etc. Could help arrange for counseling also.
