Common ground: While it depends quite a bit on the diagnosis, generally one tries to form a therapeutic alliance. In other words to try and help the individual understand we are there to help, that we can be trusted and want to help that person reach their goals. If it a life or : Death situation - the court system may become involved. This may result in the patient being detained in a mental health facility. Patients don't always go with the treatment plan a provider recommends. To a large extent this is a free will issue. I try to explore resistance with the patient ; to insure that informed consent information was thorough.
