Fight or flight: Nervousness is a normal human emotion that has adaptive qualities. The emotion is our warning system that something is to be feared in our environment. Whether it is the sound of rustling in the bushes or going in front of a crowd to give a speech. As such, this emotion is telling us to avoid or run away from the situation or to confront the fear. You choose to avoid, which then decreases the ner.

Avoidance is one: Way to deal with that which is uncomfortable. Sometimes that is an adaptive response and at other times it may prevent you from dealing with issues that really do require attention.
