Self harm: Some psychiatrists, myself included, still practice psychotherapy as well as manage medications. For self-harm, you can be evaluated & a treatment plan outlined, for example, if there is underlying major depression you would start psychotherapy & medications, and for habitual self-harm you might start dialectical behavior therapy & possibly medications.

To understand : There are many possible causes. We all benefit from understanding why we do what we do. Much of our behavior is driven by learned behavior patterns from our childhood or significant events in our lives. Seeing these patterns and getting some distance from them can liberate us from suffering. One approach is mindfulness meditation.
