A member asked:

Why is the influenza epidemic so deadly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Infection: Viral infections kill the cells they invade. During epidemics there are large numbers of people susceptible to severe infection as a result of age, underlying immune function, comorbidities, etc. Influenza also predisposes to severe secondary infections, usually pneumonia and this can also kill. Stay immunized. Yearly vaccine.
