A member asked:

Does covid-19 being a pandemic mean it's more deadly than an epidemic? have there been other pandemics to this degree in recent history?

Pandemic: An epidemic disease affects many people at the same time. A pandemic disease is an epidemic disease that has spread throughout the world. It does not mean it is more deadly. It is more widespread. The most recent pandemic was novel influenza A H1N1 in 2009.

Pandemics: A pandemic effects more people/ countries than an epidemic and that usually means more deaths. HIV is a pandemic. H1N1 was a pandemic. Just over a hundred years ago the Spanish Flu caused millions of death.
