Why do men get a beer belly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Metabolic/Genetic: Weight gain with metabolic problems like diabetes causes excessive abdominal fat buildup. Typically men get this pattern because their muscle pattern creates the telltale shape. Women can have abdominal fat, but tend to get "jelly bellies" on top of the muscle. Perhaps this is protective for being able to carry pregnancies, where belly fat would compromise the space available for baby.
