A member asked:

Is it safe to do cosmetic plastic surgery and what are the associated risks?

Yes it is safe: Cosmetic surgery is as safe as any other surgery. There are risks and complications with any surgical procedure, and specific risks for specific procedures. You should talk to a plastic surgeon about the procedure you are wanting, and find out what risks there are with that specific procedure.

Safe: The risks of cosmetic plastic surgery are the same as any other surgery: infection, hematoma, wound breakdown, hypertrophic/unacceptable scarring, bleeding, as well as the potential cosmetic problems such as overcorrection, undercorrection, contour irregularity, inability to achieve a specific cosmetic result, etc.

Board Certification: There are risks to all treatment options. It is important to go to a board certified plastic surgeon. Board certification ensures that the physician has completed the necessary training in the specialty they are practicing.

Risk assessment: Research your surgery, so that you have the right questions of risk for your surgeon. Do not focus only on board certification, as if the surgeon is a jerk you won't feel like going back for follow ups, which are as important as the surgery. Research patient reviews and find out how available, personable, approachable, punctual your surgeon is. Choose someone who you trust, and has time for you.

Safe : All surgery has potential risks of bleeding, infection and scarring of less than optimal quality. However, if the patient is healthy, the procedure not overly zealous and the surgeon well trained, these risks can be minimized. For additional information , www.Artofplasticsurgery.Com.

Safe. Be careful.: As with any procedure, there are risks. Bleeding, infection, and anesthesia complications are the most "common" risks that we talk about. There may be risk particular to that operation. Your board certified plastic surgeon will ask you about your health. He/she may have you see another doctor, (cardiologist, internist, hematologist) to make sure that you are healthy for your particular surgery.
