Yes: Up to 18% of female circumcisions are now performed by health professional in the belief it is safer when done by this type of individual. This may be correct, but in a perverse sense since the practice is condemned by almost every country as a barbaric genital mutilation of children with possibly life long adverse effects.

I agree with Dr. : Sudler. What is tragic is that even in countries where female genital mutilation (fgm) (more accurate terminology) is commonly practiced but has been legally banned- there are very few cases prosecuted. There is great opposition within those countries to banning fgm. It is interesting that after extensively researching which countries have no ban on fgm - I am only able to find gambia. >.
