Staph epidermidis: Staphylococcus epidermidis or staph epi is a bacterium that normally inhabits the skin. It is usually considered non-pathogenic but under certain circumstances, it has been found to cause infection. During birth, a baby can brush against your skin and contract it.

Staph epi everywhere: Estimates exist that state all newborns begin to acquire some bacteria on their skin by 6 hours of age.(usually staph epi + others) this is often in spite of normal hospital practices. Mom, dad & all visitors that touch baby may pass their staph & it usually simply stays on the body surface causing no harm. Kids also begin to swallow germs that contaminate their fingers & mouth.
