A member asked:

What exactly is hyperchloremic acidosis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Loss of fixed base: This is lost from the body when the proximal renal tubule does a poor job of reabsorbing bicarbonate, (sodium bicarbonate) drainage of pancreatic fluid, diarrhea (usually rich in potassium and bicarbonate), and a few less common entities. It's a sign on a lab report intended to guide treatment rather than a disease itself. Great question, and thanks for asking.
