They can: Mothers transfer antibodies through the placenta.This gives babies transient protection for many minor illnesses.However, babies remain vulnerable to variety of bacteria. These can enter the birth canal & the bag of waters when it opens.If these germs enter babies nasal passages or lungs during labor or delivery, they can later enter the blood & cause sepsis.
