A member asked:

Are streptococcus mutans the same as oral cavities ?

No: Strep mutans are the bacteria in your mouth that cause cavities. They are naturally in everyone's mouth. A cavity occurs when the strep mutans metabolize (feed on) sugars and produce an acid which then weakens the tooth enamel causing a cavity. The longer the acid stays on your tooth the more it weakens the enamel. Thats why saliva is so good, it washes away that acid.
