A member asked:

Is it safe to keep a partial denture in the mouth all the time?

No: Wearing a partial denture 24/7 can cause significant problems with the structures supporting and beneath your partial denture. The tissue beneath your partial denture need to have an opportunity to recover from the stress and forces that are placed on them when the partial denture is worn.

No: Removable partial dentures should be taken out before going to sleep. This will provide an opportunity to clean them, prevent choking on them, and give the soft tissues in the mouth to "breathe". Leaving them in overnight can cause fungal and/or bacterial infections. Some rpd's should be taken out to eat. Consult your dentist for proper instructions for your particular prosthesis.

Usually not: I almost always recommend that patients remove the dentures at night to allow the tissue underneath a chance to recover and breathe. The only time that i recommend keeping the dentures in at night are for tmj/tmd patients where changing the bite upon removal from day to night may cause the muscles and jaw joints to be confused and affect your problems.

No: The partial denture must be removed after each meal and at night. After each meal to clean the food that is trapped underneath it and around the teeth. At night so that the denture will not irritate the gingiva and prevention of aspirating the denture.

NO: You should remove it and clean it and the mouth whenever you eat. Then leave it out at night while you sleep -- after thoroughly cleaning it and the teeth / gums. The tissues need to rest and fill back up with fluid and get more air.

No-remove for sleep: A partial denture is to be removed at night to allow the tiisues to breathe and to prevent any aspiration to occur. If possible, you may discuss with the dentist getting rid of the partial and getting implant supported crowns, if finances allow. At 38, this may be a quality of life issue.

Not recommended: A partial denture must always be removed as it may damage your remaining teeth.
