Depends (No pun): Since i don't know his age it's hard to be specific. There are many reasons for constipation including lack of proper nerves in the bowel wall. You need to get him to a doctor to sort this out.

Assess his diet: The first thing i would do is look into his diet. Is he getting enough fiber, fruit and vegetable matter? Is he consuming to much of the types of food that are constipating; white bread, rice and so forth. Additionally is he drinking enough water? Only after a serious look into diet would i move to medicines.

Fiber,stool softners: He should see a doctor if has not, to make sure there are no problems. Once this is done then to help with bm :1)exercise2)plenty of water3)fiber-30 grams daily with diet and supplements4)stool softeners-2 at bedtime5)occasional laxative 2x per month.For the hemorrhoids: warm baths(sizt) 4x daily and after bm , otc hemorriodal creams or suppositories. I find changing your diet can solve this most.
