Depends on grade: An ac joint sprain can range from a minor stretch of the ligaments, to a complete rupture with significant displacement of the clavicle. Grade i-ii sprains will resolve on their own, grade iv-vi injuries require surgery. Grade iii injuries can be treated with surgery or non-operative treatment. Non-operative treatment takes about 6 weeks to show improvement. Shoulder activity will be limited.

AC SEPARATION: Typically an AC JOINT separation can be treated conservatively when it is only a type 2 or 3. Treatment consists of therapy to regain motion after a short period in a sling. If pain persists or you have pain with activities then sometimes surgical intervention is warranted. Consult an Orthopaedic surgeon for a complete work up. Hope this information is helpful. Take care. Wilsonshoulder.com

Varies: It depends partly on the severity of the injury and also on the activity level you are returning to. Don’t hesitate to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon to discuss the specifics of your case.
