Diet: Diet, the bacteria that causes caries live off of carbohydrates and especially sugars. Metabolism of these sugars causes the bacteria to produce an acid that weakens the enamel. Acidic drinks can also cause this. Anything that helps eliminate that acid from sitting on your teeth helps, such as swishing with water, or chewing gum which increases saliva. Saccharin (in gum) has also shown to help.
