How often will a person with a colostomy have a bowel movement?

Depends: Usually a colostomy will function daily. It depends if it is a new colostomy or if it had been present longer. Long term colostomy may just function once a day, and newer ones may function more than once a day at first. Also depends on how much is eaten each day and any underlying medical conditions or colitis.

1/week: You may initially pass some stool from the anus to empty the rectum of residual stool. After those initial bms then you may pass mucous from the anus occasionally.
