Yes and no: When steroids are used under the guidance of a physician, they can be beneficial if not truly life saving. When misused, they can cause irreversible damage to the body.

My adrenal levels are twice the norm. But my doctor said I can take steroids to lower it. How does this work?

Good question: Significant reduction in androgen levels of adrenal source (such as dhea-s & androstenedione) if the body is subjected to exogenous steroids such as Dexamethasone due to creation of negative feeback on the pituitary gland causing decreased acth production. This in turn will reduce the signaling to the adrenal gland that will reduce overall adrenal hormone production and improved clinical symptoms.

They affect cells: Corticosteroids function by first binding a receptor inside cells. Virtually all cells in the body have this receptor which controls development, metabolism, and immunity. Various health conditions may improve with systemic steroids because its effects are so widespread, but long-term use and high doses cause significant side effects. Steroids should therefore be prescribed and used judiciously.

Injected depo-steroids have been reported to cause osteonecrosis of the hip, a condition that may require hip replacement. Steroid injections more than a few times per year place you at risk for multiple other complications as well. Steroid injections are not the same as "allergy shots" (immunotherapy) so be careful.
