Why are steroids important in medicine if they tend to have a bad reputation?

Steroids: There are different types of steroids. Anabolic steroids and similar compounds are often abused in a non-medical way to build muscle and enhance athletic performance, often illegaly. There are other classes of steroids that, for example, suppress inflammatory or immune responses(e.g. corticosteroids), and are used in a host of medical indications.
