Some possibilities: Has the cause of the pain been found? Nerves can be pinched, in the back, but in soft tissues, between muscles, by a stitch (from surgery), by a scar, etc. A good osteopathic exam, in addition to your current therapy might be in order & might lead to non-medicinal treatment. You can get off pain meds, but the question is are you more functional on or off them? That's a very personal decision.

Hypnosis: Hypnosis, accupuncture, and other alternative treatments have been proven effective in refractory pain. People anecdotally are able to completely stop pain medication.
