Bile Duct Infection: Ascending cholangitis describes an infection in the bile duct, usually secondary to obstruction. Common causes include bile duct stones, strictures, or tumors. These infections can be very serious because bacteria readily enter the bloodstream from the liver. Rx includes antibiotics +/-relief of the obstruction via endoscopy (ercp). ***sclerosing cholangitis is an unrelated inflammatory dz***.
