Unusually high level: of the signaling peptide BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) have been detected in children w/ autism. BDNF regulates birth and differentiation of brain cells (neurons). Barbara Hempstead et al (Weill Medical College, Cornell Univ) propose that BDNF may be over-expressed in the brains of these children, causing neurological defects that lead to the disorder but causation not yet proven.
