Different causes: A cold sore is caused by a viral infection whereas impetigo is caused by a bacterial infection (staph). It is not uncommon though to have a secondary bacterial infection on top of a viral cold sore. If you notice that there are yellow pustules and crusting forming over the original cold sore or elsewhere on the body, it could be impetigo as well. Get swabs done if concerned.
