A lot of things: Infections are the most common cause, either from bacteria or viruses. Cancers and a large number of other disease can also cause them to enlarge. Most of the time lymph node enlargement is not due to cancer. Your doctor can check them out and help.

Many....: The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is infection (bacterial or viral). It sometimes can take 1-2 months for the enlarged lymph nodes to return to their normal size after an infection. If the lymph nodes continue to grow, occur in different areas of the body, or you start getting sick symptoms (fevers, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fatigue), i would go see your doctor.

Many things: Lymph nodes are one of the ways in which our body tries to eliminate harmful things, such as infection or cancer or other forms of inflammation. When they are active in this process they may become larger and be felt where they were not felt previously.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well.
