A member asked:

What does it mean for me to have "auto-antibodies?"

Attacking "self": Autoantibodies are immune proteins that attack the "self". Normally the immune system is able to recognize the body's own tissues & disregard them, but sometimes it fails & starts attacking them instead. How this process starts is not well understood. Autoantibodies are associated with various conditions such as systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, grave's disease, & coeliac disease.

Allergy to self: Auto-antibodies means that you are producing antibodies to proteins in your own body.
