PREVENTION!: There were about 700 cases of polio reported world wide during 2011, mostly on the african continent and parts of south central asia. Including afghanistan. So in a sense it is a plane ride away in this globalized world. The reason it has been almost eradicated world wide are vaccines. So the only way to treat is is to prevent it through vaccination!
