Many contributors: There are many factors which can lead to heartburn. Problems with swallowing from medical conditions, diet (fatty, spicy, greasy foods, caffeine, tomato based foods, or citrus fruits or juices). Weight gain appears to be the fastest growing problem leading to increasing gerd and heartburn.

A lot: First, diet. What you eat affects your system. Stay away from sour tasting food. Second, stress. There are actually certain nerves that send signals to your stomach to increase acid when you under chronic stress. Then it could be how you sleep. Consider a higher pillow. You may have a weak diaphragm (separates lungs from abdomen) that lets acid go up close to heart. Finally consider genetics.
