Replacement: It is a type of shoulder replacement where we only replace a thin layer of the bone and overlying cartilage in a attempt to preserve the bone underneath. It can be performed in cases where the arthritis has not deformed the underlying bone. In general, it may allow more normal function. However, in reality, the results have been very similar to traditional shoulder replacements.

For arthritis: Shoulder resurfacing is an open surgery which involves placing a metal component over the arthritic humeral head (ball). It is done to reduce the pain from arthritis. It is done less commonly than the standard total shoulder replacement, but is a great option for young, active patients without much glenoid (cup) wear.
