A member asked:

Hi i have a ct scan done in 2008 due to abdominal pain, fatty liver dx, one done last week for stones, can they compare 2008 and 2012 ct to see?

THEY CAN & SHOULD: Radiologists do compare prior film/ct scans if available to them. Were the ct's done at the same place? If not they can be requested by you for comparison. Fatty liver does not resolve quickly unless signicant weight loss has been noted.

Yes: Its even more helpful if the 2008 ct scan included IV contrast.

Yes: Although your scan may have been done on a different ct scanner with different resolution depending on the strenght of the magnet but you can see fatty liver on a ct scan and get a qualitative estimate if it was present before or if it has increased. Obviously, ct is not the test of choice for gall stones since only about 15 per cent show up. The test of choice would be an ultrasound.
