Quite variable...: Ptsd is quite common and it is often a chronic condition for many. Good support from family/friend/work environmen t is important. Many require medications and therapy to cope, and often do well if taking meds and cont with therapy etc... Healing takes time adn regular follow-up with your doc/therapist is improtant. Don't stop your med w/o letting your doc/therapist know. Best of luck to you.

Variable: Some people have some symptoms of ptsd but don't meet diagnostic criteria. Other people have mild ptsd. Some have severe sxs. Ptsd could be from one traumatic event (simple) or from numerous events and stressors (complex). Thus there is no one time table for recovery. If ptsd is severe, psychiatric meds are likely indicated. Cognitive processing therapy has outstanding results with ptsd.

Management: Typically with the more severe cases of PTSD, the medical/psychological is not so much about curing it, as it is about effectively managing it. It never goes away in the sense of being cured. In a way both patients and doctors are students of managing severe cases of PTSD, and never master of controlling it, unfortunately.
