Anyone. The spine.: Anyone can get a fractured back. Your spine has 24 vertebrae ( 7 cervical, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar) plus the sacrum. A fracture in any of these bones is considered a fracture in the spine/back. In young healthy people it takes a very high energy trauma, like a car accident, to break the spine. In people with osteoporosis or tumors in the bone, the spine can break with minimal or no trauma.
