When should a patient agree to surgery for a rectocele? how successful is this operation?

Depends: When the benefits outweigh the risks, the patient is not willing to further suffer the effects of the rectocoele and when the patient and the doctor come to agreement on the need for the surgery and accept the risks associated with it. In good experienced hands, the surgery if very successful. Can there be failure? Yes, as with everything. Depends on the patient and on the situation.

Symptoms bothersome: Mild rectocele may not cause any symptoms and often unnoticed, but severe cases can cause much discomfort, trouble with bm, pressure, sensation of incomplete bm, and in some cases with severe. Rectocele is generally not a dangerous condition, so surgical treatment is only needed if symptoms are bothersome and conservative treatments not adequate. Talk to your doc/surgeon about it. Good luck.
