Thumb arthritis: Yes this is most likely arthritis in the joint at the base of thumb. You can try a NSAID otherwise you should get an xray.

Maybe: While arthritis is possible, tendinitis is a common cause of pain in that area. You may want to get an opinion from a rheumatologist or orthopedist.
