Hyperlexia: Young children with Asperger syndrome can have "hyperlexia, " teaching themselves to read at very early ages or having reading abilities that seem very advanced. Overdeveloped rote memory & pattern recognition account for this. Deficits in reading comprehension may not become obvious till 3rd grade, but deficits in pragmatic language (conversation) & prosody (intonation) may be noted much earlier.
