Start with college.: In order to get into medical school, you must complete a bachelors degree and take the medical college admissions test (mcat). Then after completing 4 years of medical school, you begin your 5 years of orthopaedic resident training. Finally you can do a fellowship in spine surgery. If you don't take any extra time or get stuck doing research, it will only take 10 years for you to finish training.

Years of work: College, medical school, internship, ortho residency, spine fellowship. About 14 years later, you will be ready to be the new spine surgeon, pay your dues and earn a reputation.
