A member asked:

How serious is a vertebroplasty for a compression fracture of the spine?

Its a minor surgery: Vertebroplasty is typically an outpatient surgery that is done with conscious sedation and local anesthetic. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. The complication rate is very low. There is typically minimal blood loss. Otherwise healthy patients can usually go home about an hour after the procedure.

Minimal Risk: There are risks with all procedures. Vertebroplasty done by the right physician can be an effective way to manage acute pain from a compression fracture. The main risk is leaking of the bone cement outside of the bone. Again, if done correctly this is a low risk. Please note that there are other options to treat compression fracture rather than vertebroplasty, such as kyphoplasty.

No: Relatively speaking, a vertebroplasty is a safe, effective procedure for painful vertebral compression fractures. Thank you for your question.
