Prevention is always: The best way to control it is to watch the diet by keeping your purines low. Intake of alcoholic beverages, especially beer, increases the risk for gout. Diets rich in red meats, internal organs, yeast, and oily fish increase the risk for gout. Google low purine diet for more information.

Meds: This should be discussed with your pcp. Medications can prevent flare ups. Other medications can shorten flares when they occur.

Diet, exercise, ?med: Most gout can be prevented by lowering uric acid with diet (less meat, alcohol, fructose), weight loss, and medicines. If flares become too frequent for you, see your doctor to discuss medical treatment (if the diagnosis is certain). A rheumatologist treats this kind of arthritis.
