Yes: Yes, venlafaxine is the chemical name for effexor. Effexor is a trade name and now there are generic equivalents available. If the prescription bottle says venlafaxine, then it is probably a generic. Effexor = venlafaxine works by essentially enhancing the transmission of serotonin and noradrenaline in the central nervous system. A newer antidepresant, pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) is the metabolite of venlafaxine.
