If you are: Referring to the retrieval of sperm from the testes, that is best done with local and deep sedation, or general anesthesia. It can be a long procedure and the local injections painful, so a deeper anesthetic during the injections is recommended.

Just to clarify. Egg retrieval as Dr. Pollard explained is the procedure that is used to extract your eggs (light anesthesia). Embryo transfer is the procedure where embryos are placed back into your womb (no anesthesia). ICSI is a procedure where sperm is injected in the eggs after they are retrieved. This is a procedure involving the sperm and the egg and not the intended mother. (a laboratory procedure)
